You know what they don’t tell you when “fabric softener” is a recommended technique for removing wallpaper? That the scent will permeate the hairs of your nose and you will dream about whatever scent the butterfly and generic grasses are supposed to represent. But, without any blood shed, the powder room is void of wallpaper.
I’ve never had to remove wallpaper, so honestly have no idea how it typically works, but for me… the top layer of the wallpaper peeled off without any real effort.
Which left behind the paper adhesive layer. After poking around online and throwing out the question on my Facebook Page, most people suggested spraying with a hot water/ fabric softener.
By the end of this teeny tiny room I was in a good routine and have a couple of tips for you… See the video for further explanation, but here’s what I did if you’re at work and can’t watch a video. I sprayed a small portion at a time… maybe 2×2 feet. And I REALLY saturated the paper. I tried to get ahead of myself at first and if the paper dries on you, it won’t peel off.
I had a few different ‘scraping’ tools, but this mini-crow bar was ultimately the one that worked the best. (The others were a flat drywall knife and this ‘official’ 4 edge scraper.) Time spent? Maybe 2 hours? But, this is also the size of a port-a-potty so I don’t envy those of you with a whole dining room or bedroom to de-wallpaper.
The walls are a MESS as a result of the dripping fabric softener so I’ll go back with a big sponge and clean them off. I tried a tiny patch of paper at the end with mostly water and it seemed to work just as well, but I suspect the point of the fabric softener is to thicken the liquid up a bit so it can permeate the paper. I was lucky that my vinyl paper separated so easily, but if that’s not the case then you can purchase a scoring tool that you use first which then allows the spray to soak in.
Check wallpaper off the list, folks! This room is clear. Next on my agenda? Removing the floor tile. Bye bye blue. Got any tile removal tips for me? Sledghammer? Crowbar? Breaking Bad style and poor some acid down?
