In a couple of months we will have a beautiful new guest room over our garage. Yeah, yeah, yeah… the extra space is great and getting the laundry upstairs is terrific and another bathtub will be a perk, BUT an entirely blank space to DECORATE?! Well… that, my friends, is worth a lot of afternoons with a contractor’s miter saw drowning out my Housewives viewing.
When it comes to design, I tend to be more impulsive and less deliberate with my ideas. Sometimes there’s a master plan, but more often than not, I’m just incorporating things that I love and working to cram them all into one space. So for this guest room, I’m hoping to be a little more measured. And by measured, I mean I grabbed a set of quilts at Homegoods after about 8.3 seconds and that has become the central building block for the whole room. Something like this:
The colors are a little tricky as I love the navy and the turquoise, but I’d also love to bring in a little pop somewhere else. The going theory for this room is that it will be a guest room, but also a space for the baby. When we have visitors the baby is definitely the easiest body in the house to bring into our room for a couple of nights, so Martha might also get a real room to herself when all is said and done. (But don’t tell her as I don’t want her to hold me to that… she can be such a pain.)
An amazing ginger jar lamp like this was a flea market score and I plan to put it on a bedside table between the two twin beds that will go in there.
After my practice with the master bedroom headboard, I think I’ll try again on two more twin beds… simple shapes. Maybe turquoise in color to coordinate with the beds.
As much as I love a geometric carpet, I think something less complicated will be better with the pattern on the quilts. And a solid throw will also help temper the big bold pattern.
I snagged an adorable pendant light similar to this at a local consignment store which could look nice hanging from a ceiling fixture we added.
Basic white Roman shades with a navy accent might work as window treatments…
Finally, we’ll bring in the navy and white glider that has been living in Eleanor an Oliver’s room, maybe some throw pillows and a fun circus picture from the flea I’ve been waiting to find a home for. Smash all that together in one image and voila!
I’m still undecided as to a paint color… I don’t want to go dark dark navy so maybe a very pale turquoise to pick up the quilt accents. Who knows how it will all come together?! Lord knows the baby won’t care. Heck, the baby can’t see color for a few months so I’ve bought myself some time right there.
