Hang onto your hats, folks… I’ve got a stenciling game changer for you. For reals, this rocked my little DIY world.
Before I get too carried away with my rave reviews, I need to mention that Cutting Edge Stencils did provide me with this accent pillow stencil kit and accessories for free, but… as with all of my reviews and sponsored posts, the opinions and commentary are blabbed right from my own two lips.
Backing up… I’ve stenciled before and here’s where it always breaks down slightly for me: It’s messy and can get sloppy real fast as a result… which is kinda the kiss of death when you’re trying to piece together 12 sheets of stencil across a wall. I’m getting better, and it’s still my preference over wallpaper but… it’s time consuming and daunting. Well, not today’s stencil project. I finished this AMAZING pillow in 30 minutes. (Tack on another 30 minutes to let the paint dry, but still… done in under an hour!)
I’ve worked with Cutting Edge Stencils before and I LOVE them. They make it as easy as they possibly can to accomplish really fun and elegant looking stencils. I used stencils in my cloffice, on an early version of this bench makeover and, most recently, on this amazing accent wall in the kids’ room. I survived to see another day, but never thought I’d finish a stencil project like this in under 30 minutes. These pillow kits are miracles, I’m telling you.
The kit itself comes pretty much locked and loaded. The pillow is already stretched over a piece of stiff cardboard and set in place under the stencil. A roller tray, foam roller and detail brush are included. All to say for pillow #1, I didn’t have to do ANYTHING to set it all up. Just open the paint, and start stenciling. I tend to err on the side of extreme caution with stenciling so I barely load my roller with paint the first few passes. Excess paint is a stencil projects kryptonite- don’t do it. After a few passes, you can see the paint better coating the pillow and the design is coming through.
For the first pillow, I was ginger around the edges and went back with the little detail brush per the tip on the instructions. Once the pillow looked dark and uniform, I removed it from underneath the stencil. These little clips simply bend up to release the stencil.
Insert the next pillow, replace the stencil and pin in place. For the second pillow, my foam brush was a little more forgiving because it was more saturated with paint. I was able to get a rich solid color much faster. I was also able to roll right to the edges so there was no need for the detail brush.
Another fun little perk of these stencil kits is a whole range of pillow embellishments (and pillow inserts!): tassels and rhinestones and fabric flowers and grommets… Nuts, right?! I was given the choice of a few accessories, and of COURSE I chose tassels. You can also purchase a tassel attaching tool (not the technical term) which I recommend. You simply poke it through the pillow from the inside, and pull the tassel through and knot it.
Two gorgeous throw pillows ready for business. The array of pillow stencil kits will blow your mind. I think I pinned about 12 options before settling on the one you see here. I will DEFinitely do this again and next time I might try one that involves different colors. Fancy! (Note: I was too eager to take pictures to do this at first, but for items you plan to launder, it’s recommended that you heat set the paint by placing a piece of fabric on top and going over it with an iron first.)
Not that my brand new stenciled pillows aren’t the answer to your dreams, but… how would you like a chance to win your own pillow kit?! Cutting Edge Stencils is a rock star and they’re giving away an accent pillow kit to one lucky Ciburbanity reader so grab your rabbit’s foot and your lucky pink socks and enter! I haven’t made any of these entry options mandatory, but I would SO appreciate it if you’d subscribe to get Ciburbanity right to your inbox, or follow me on Instagram OR like my Facebook page.
