Disclosure: I am so grateful to World Market for giving me the chance to give back to the community by providing me with gift cards to use for the amazing holiday items shown below.
I’ve been keeping mum about something that I’m so over the moon excited about, but today I get a chance to dish. Get your snuggie and a red cup of holiday Starbucks ready, because we’re going to get into it. A little back story though… a million years ago, I was a teacher and then half a million years ago I became an elementary school guidance counselor. And I loved it. Every day I was working with people and supporting people and collaborating with people and it filled my spirit. Those of you who have been reading this blog for a while (hi, mom) know all this. I gave up the counseling and the education when we left the city and Ciburbanity (city + suburb + sanity) was born… and it is TRULY my lifeline. It gives ME something to do and ironically all the hours spent styling and building and coding and social media-ing keeps me sane. Well, moderately sane. But the missing piece of this new found gig of mine is the chance to work *with* people and to make a legit difference in someone’s life- not just prettying up a powder room or encouraging someone to attempt a jigsaw.
Until now. (This is the point of this post where I imagine one of those deep voiced movie trailer voices reading that phrase… “until NOW”… can you hear it?!) I digress. My inspiration: for the past few years, GMC has taken a group of bloggers down the longest yard sale between Detroit and Atlanta and during the course of their week, they pick and hunt and bargain for items with which they can decorate a newly built Habitat For Humanity house. Meaning… for less than $400 a room, each blogger works their thrifting super powers and the family gets to move into a FURNISHED and DECORATED new home. I LOVE this idea so hard. Here’s the glitch. If you’ve been following my blog for a while (hi, mom) then you also know that the last couple of summers have involved pregnancy or a newborn. Not ideal for traveling down the longest yardsale. So… this summer, I took matters into my own hands and recruited a posse of New England bloggers, reached out to the local branch of Habitat for Humanity and… come this spring, we will be outfitting and furnishing and fixing up a brand new home in central CT. Bloggers Heart Habitat was born.
I cannot WAIT to share more about the family, about the house, about the other bloggers, about the rooms… the whole project makes me ACHE with joy. This is TRULY a chance to work with an amazing family and give them something that they can have with them forever. Not that upholstering an Ikea shelf isn’t super fun, but this… this is the stuff that fills my heart.
Which is another reason I’m tickled green and red to be partnering with the incredible World Market as one of their Share the Joy bloggers. Every year during the holiday season, World Market reaches out to bloggers and gives us the chance to give back to our community on a broader scale. Given my new relationship with Habitat for Humanity I am so grateful for this opportunity.
As new homeowners, Habitat families may not have the ability to decorate their homes for Christmas to the extent that we might as DIY bloggers. Seasonal decorations are such a luxury but man do they make a house feel like a home. One of my favorite wedding presents for a new couple is a box of Christmas ornaments to go on their newlywed tree. For our Habitat family, I wanted to give them the same opportunity, so I found a smorgasbord of fun and easy holiday decor for them to adorn their newly built home. Wanna see what types of goodies I picked out for my holiday starter kit?
Right off the bat, I had to include this sweet door mat… the symbolism of a new holiday welcome mat outside a new family home puts a lump in my throat.
One thing I learned right away from these homeowners is that family comes first and there are sweet quotes all over their home to support this sentiment. You KNOW I will take any opportunity to bring in words or letters into a design, so this amazing set of marquee letters will be perfect. And the beauty of the word “Joy” is that it doesn’t necessarily have to come down after the holidays!
Next up is the obvious: Christmas tree ornaments. I’m loving all the cozy woodland creatures and vintage throw backs on the World Market site this season. Included here is the forest cardinal, my favorite- the tree on the car, and these delicate woodcut hearts. I’m hoping to order these felt mice at a later date when they’re back in stock!
As whimsical as these decorations might be, I also wanted to bring the holidays into the family’s everyday routine a bit, so this bright and happy red cake stand is ready for some baked goods and hopefully these melamine drink cups will make the witching hour with their three-year-old a little more manageable.
If baked goods and Santa cups don’t do the trick, then these adorable mini snow globes might occupy the little one long enough to get some chicken nuggets on a plate! (Or… they can get stashed away as a fun stocking stuffer!)
Finally, I loved that these snow-covered twigs will literally let me share the joy with this amazing family.
Habitat for Humanity is one of these organizations that we all know about but having the opportunity to work WITH them and to truly see all that they take on for each house is a blessing. From selecting a family to including them in the building process to working with the community to having everything in place for a smooth and joyful transition into this new home… that, folks, is what the spirit of giving is all about.
Tune in for MUCH more about this Bloggers Heart Habitat project. If you’re local (Connecticut) and want to get involved, please don’t hesitate to contact me. If you’re not nearby, consider contacting your local Habitat branch and offering a hand. If you’re not comfortable with a hammer and nails, then they’ll give you a paint brush. If you’re not comfortable with a paint brush, then they’ll give you a shovel. If you’re not comfortable with a shovel, then ask what else you can help with! These are INCREDIBLE families who are working so hard for their new homes and any little bit helps!
If you like any of the products I mentioned, then you’ll hyperventilate over all the other holiday items at World Market. Maybe a gift basket or a a collection of stocking stuffers…think about any deserving new home owners in your community and consider giving them a head start with their holiday decor by putting together your own Holiday Starter Kit!
