Are you sitting down? Kidding… you don’t need to be, but given the topic of this post, I thought maybe that would be an amusing intro. I’m talking powder rooms and potties today. Well really just one, but ours is so bad that I can mention it twice.
Backstory: We bought our house almost 4 years ago from an older homeowner who didn’t always do things in the most thorough manner. (If you get my drift.) We’ve been sort of undoing her ‘handiwork’ ever since. This powder room literally opens up into the dining room. Like if you’re sitting at the head of the table about to carve into a Christmas goose, you can look to your right and tell me what color socks the person using the restroom is wearing. What we use as a dining room HAD been the previous home owner’s office… complete with blocked up window for her bookshelves. So the bathroom makes a little more sense. But only barely because there’s a closet around the corner WITH A WINDOW that seems like it might have been a more logical option for a powder room. But that’s just me.
Because of this layout dilemma, we didn’t do anything major to this space with the intent of hopefully moving it back to where it belongs and converting the closet. But that’s mad expensive so… the powder room has remained just where it is.
To put some lipstick on this pig, I wallpapered and hung a mirror and…. Tried to close my eyes whenever I went in. Until now. This, ladies and gentlemen is my next big project. (The real reason is a birthday party for Mark that’s looming… you know how it goes… I just couldn’t bare to have so many people witness to this awful turquoise disaster.)
I’ll try to share the bathroom progress real time. The To Do list is long and windy and there are lots of things that I’ve never tackled. But… people on YouTube assure me I can do it!
Come with me folks, and take in the grandeur that is the Aqua Awfulness. I need to address:
- Floor tiles
- Wall treatment
- Ceiling fan
- And maybe the light… but that’s brand new and not quite as high on the offense scale as the rest of the place.
If you follow me on Facebook (and you should!!), then you know I went out hunting and scavenging earlier last week… and I didn’t have a ton of luck, but…. As with many home projects, I have a better gameplan having ruled out some original options. For example, I was sniffing glue enough to think that a pedestal sink was 1) something I could tackle on my own and 2) something that would work in this tiny space. Turns out, the 18” of space I have does not accommodate many pedestal sinks. So the sink might have to stay put.
I’ve never tiled a floor… so that will be a learning experience.
I have replaced a toilet and thankfully, the only toilet small enough for this space was diiiiirt cheap. Sure, the innards of said toilet seem to break within a few months, but good news is that I also know how to replace the innards… so it’s still cheaper than the other behemoths.
I’ve already pulled off lots of the poorly hung wallpaper and I’ll share my planned wall treatment with you along with other fun ideas.
A couple of weeks ago, I posted this image for you on Facebook to see what people preferred so you’ll have to hang in on this powder room journey to see if I agreed with you!
I can use all the tips and tricks you guys have to offer! Wallpaper tips? Tiling tips?
