I don’t know what it was about this guy that called out to me, but I loved it immediately. A flea market is a funny experience because for some things, $10 is WAY too much, and yet for others $80 is a bargain. Well, this was closer to the latter, but worth it in my blogging opinion.
It’s an old sign board. I was drawn to the simple, industrial, utilitarian cool factor of it. Bonus that it came loaded with what appeared to be enough letters to spell lots of things.
The first thing I did was take an old toothbrush to the felt on the inside to give it a dusting and remove a little bit of the ‘age’ that had set in.
Then I pulled off and organized all the letters. What to write? Food menu for the week? Hells to the no… laughable that I would ever be that organized. A quote? Didn’t seem to jive with the aesthetic of the sign. Rules? There are certain things that I tell my kids a lot, but they’re not posted as rules per say… until now.
I tried to keep the language short and sweet and came up with five Smith Family Rules.
- Be kind.
- Gentle hands and feet. (i.e. NO hitting and NO kicking…)
- Use your words
- Please and thank you
- Have fun together
This frame didn’t look so dirty until I took a magic eraser to it. Yuck.
I hung it in the kitchen where it’s visible for everyone. I’m sure I’ll change things up as the kids get older and need different rules like ‘No holograms at the table’ and ‘Wipe your feet after playing on the hovercraft.’ (Any tips for taking pictures of something like this without getting so much glare?! Ugh.)
And maybe one day I WILL get my act together enough to post menus for the week… a girl’s gotta have something to reach for!
