One of the first projects I tackled when we moved out to the burbs full time was to hang a gallery wall going up our staircase. I collected the frames, created templates, got out graph paper, pulled out my high school TI-81… it was a process.
Fast forward to this past summer and adios to the gallery wall during our construction. For months I’ve been staring at the boxes of black frames and skipping over the “Hang Gallery Wall” line item on my to do list. So daunting. So many pieces. So many sleeping children to wake up with all the hammering.
Well, as is the nature of this DIY house of cards, I’m starting to do some work in the room where these boxes of photos were collecting dust so time to get off my caboose and hang these bad boys. As I mentioned, last time I tried the template approach. This time I wanted to wing it a bit more…
Because these images are going up the staircase (so hanging on a diagonal), I started by choosing a midline and running a string between this point from the top to the bottom of the staircase. (A chalk line would totally have worked, but I didn’t want to deal with cleaning the chalk of the wall after…)
I had 4 or 5 fairly large frames so I staggered these evenly along the line to create my foundation.
Then, moving from the larger frames down to the smaller ones, I gradually added my frames. I wasn’t super precise, but I was logical… i.e. if I had six 11 x 14 frames, I arranged these evenly along the wall. Ditto, the 8 x 10 frames. Basically, I was careful to vary the layout so that all my large frames weren’t clumped in one area… and all of my little frames weren’t clumped in one area.
All in all, the spacing ended up about right and I covered the whole wall with some room to spare. I didn’t go any lower than Martha’s shoulder height since she uses the wall to help her get up and down the stairs. And as for the highest parts… when I go to add more pictures, I guess I’ll have to make nice with someone super tall to help me hang things moving forward.
Finally, for your viewing pleasure, I put together this GIF to show you how this looked as I gradually built up the gallery wall.
Here’s how it compares to the last gallery wall… what do you think? I actually like this new improv gallery wall better!
The kids love going up and down and looking at all the photos. And I just love looking at my beautiful family… all 9 dozen times I run up and down the stairs to get something throughout the day!
