Mixing Texture and Pattern in Our Guest Room

Psssst… this post *might* contain affiliate links: see my disclosure here.

One of the nice features about this ‘newish’ house of ours is that the guest room isn’t shared with one of our kids. I pulled it together with furniture from the guest room in the last house, but I also found a place for my crazy embroidered art collection!

I chuckle that individually, each of these pieces are a little kitschy, but… all together, I love the texture and color and eclectic fun of them all!  This room is my embroidered art magnum opus, if you will.

Shop my favorites!

I spray painted some of the frames antique white to bring in some cohesion, but they’re all the same style of needlework.

It would be disrespectful of me if I didn’t acknowledge the elephant in the room. I love you guys, so please don’t take this personally… but that one dang blanket on the bed is askew. I’ve been staring at that $%^*(*&%$* corner out of whack for hours. And I’m sorry. It won’t happen again. (It will TOTALLY happen again, but regardless… please don’t go!)

The bedding is from Homegoods, but I made the throw pillows from two table runners I picked up years ago at Ikea. I added my favorite ball fringe (affiliate) and… aren’t they fun?

The bedside table is a chicken crate cleaned up from the flea market. 4 legs and some tempered glass and we were in business.

Fun fact. This Ikea dresser used to hold ALL our sheets. I’m still not sure how that’s humanly possible, but now it’s nice and empty for our guests to use.

The twin beds are from Craigslist but the veneer has started to come apart on the head board and foot board. Rather than spend hours with wood glue and clamps, I draped a vintage wool blanket over the headboards to help protect them from further chipping.

My aunt moved into a smaller house and passed along that AMAZING kilim rug. It’s one of my all time favorites and I was hoping to use it in our dining room or foyer… sadly it was too long and skinny for both spaces, so I layered it up there along with the cotton geometric rug from Urban Outfitters.

And that’s it! Aside from the whole crooked blanket embarrassment, this room is a little bit quirky, but hopefully still comfortable for anyone who is brave enough to come stay with us!

  1. I LOVE your collection of embroidered art. I am always a fan of kitchy artwork like that and you have an AMAZING collection. I love that you layered the carpets too. I can never figure out how to make it work. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks, Tonia! I’m not sure I layered the rugs right in here, but I HAD to have that long one somewhere. 🙂 I never realized how many embroidered pieces I’d find once I started collecting!

  2. Charlotte chicken crates never looked so good! You should come to my farm and see the real before. lol. The room looks great but we are never going to forgive you for that blanket. Giving us bloggers a bad name “wink”! I love the kitschy wall, it adds loads of personality.

  3. Hi Charlotte,
I too LOVE the embroidery display! I’m curious how you FRAMEd the embroidery. Did you take the glass out of the frames? Or did you actually leave them in and somehow keep the glass from touching the embroidery?
