Today’s my birthday!
Correction. Today’s my 40th birthday, so a BIIIG ONE!
Life is swirling around right now with the move and the packing and the restaurant and the pregnancy so I haven’t had any real moments of reflection. But… 40 is exciting! Mark and I chuckled as he went to bed the other night and wished me a happy last day of my thirties… surrounded by boxes and children’s socks and moderately hobbled by the aches and pains of the 3rd trimester. Granted this may not be the most memorable time of the decade but it’s certainly a wonderful hint of what excitement is hopefully coming up for the next ten years. I started thinking about all the accomplishments and milestones I was able to check off between 2005 and 2015… and my 30s were extraordinary!
Here’s what I accomplished in my 30s!
-I graduated with an M. Ed. in Psychological Counseling from Teacher’s College at Columbia University
-I met the love of my life and got married.
-Mark and I bought our first home
-We have four beautiful children with one more kicking away and due in June
-On a lark, I started a blog. Clearly I knew nothing about choosing a name for that blog, but even less about social media and design and photography…
-Because of the blog, I’ve made new friends, learned new skills and discovered new opportunities
-I’ve been on HGTV’s Flea Market Flip
-I’ve been in Better Homes and Gardens
-I built a website and redesigned a restaurant
-I spent a fraction of Mark’s salary at Home Depot and Homegoods
-I’ve accumulated enough furniture to fill a couple of different homes
-I ran a few marathons
Goals for my 40s?
-After years of being in various stages of pregnancy, I need to get back on the fitness train. Exercise has been replaced by power tools and paint samples over here… no bueno.
-Travel. Specifically with Mark… we need to get away and be together more!
-The new house... sooooooo many fun projects and things to learn.
-I want my kids to be kind and compassionate and confident. This is a big decade for them. Eleanor will be in high school when I turn 50, Oliver will be in the throws of adolescence with Martha close at his heels and Louisa and the baby will probably be hunkered down trying to dodge the fire coming from their big siblings!
-I said this in January, but I want to reupholster an entire piece of furniture (and not just a mini rocker). How’s that for a DIY goal?!
-Continue to build my television brand… I’d love to be on camera more and in a different capacity
-Grow Ciburbanity with a local audience: local publications and home shows and speaking engagements and more!
Thanks for indulging me as I ponder what WAS the past decade of my 30s and what WILL BE the upcoming decade of my 40s. Today, on my 40th birthday, I’m less than two months away from meeting another beautiful baby, I’m one week away from new memories in a new home, I have an amazing husband, a posse of strong and intelligent women who inspire me everyday, a long list of mentors and colleagues I’ve met as a result of this blog, and a garage full of furniture ready for their makeovers!
Life is good.
