I found these pictures on my computer the other day and realized I’d never shared this little tip… the images aren’t stellar, but the intel might be helpful! Rugs. I find them SO hard to shop for. I don’t trust myself to spend a ton of money on something like this, so I tend to ‘buy low’ when it comes to area rugs. So what’s my tip? Don’t feel limited by the size of any ONE rug… consider combining smaller rugs to fit your space.
We have this area in our new and improved kitchen that seems a little bare without a rug. But… a typical runner (2′ x 8′ give or take) was waaaaaay too skinny.
These little throw rugs were at Homegoods and I loved the simple neutral pattern and color.
Because they were so little, I grabbed two and using some heavy jute twine, I just stitched the two rugs together making sure to line up the pattern.
Can’t really tell can you? Obviously, a rug with more texture or pattern is better suited for this since you won’t be able to see the seam line, but it’s a handy little cheat to keep in mind if you’re struggling to find the right rug for your space.
I’m off to Atlanta for a kids free weekend at the Haven Conference for DIY Bloggers. I went last year and was green as a bean. NO idea what aspects of blogging I was whiffing on (the ignorance is bliss phase) and knowing not a SOUL.
For any rookie bloggers out there reading this, know that Haven is intense. But in a good way! I had no idea what to expect, but even in my bubble of baby blogger ignorance, I came away with goals for my blog (SEO tweeks to be made, advertising intel, graphics, social media…), a wallet full of business cards and blogs to check out, and… MOST importantly… legitimate face-to-face time with women who SHARE and GET my passion for all things blogging. And beyond this face-to-face time? Real friendships. I know… how can you have a real friendship with someone you never see? Trust me… you can.
Not sure I have any words of wisdom other than buck up and just be yourself. I was exhausted every night after making small talk for 8 hours, but from small talk comes big talk… it just takes a little time. I wasn’t confident enough to really approach brands with a schpeal because I felt “too small” but I will say that I’m not sure the brands are all that concerned with page views… honestly. I just think they appreciate passionate and creative people who are willing to be excited about their brand and share it with their audience no matter what the size of the blog!
Oh! Follow up with people after the weekend no matter what the size of their blog! I loved going back through my cards and getting to know people through their blog. My blog bestie, Jessica, and I got to really know each other when she hit me up on Facebook a few days after the conference and we’ve been chatting ever since!
Just say ‘hi’. My other blog bestie, Dena, wasn’t even blogging last year (!!!), but Jessica and I fell in love with her when we saw the name of her blog AND how killer her stuff was and each of us coincidentally just emailed her!
Also, social media is real, y’all. I was late to get my tickets last year, but I know of SO many people who got to know each other through their interactions on social media. Pick whichever one works for you… Instagram’s my jam. Hey! You should totally follow me there! Comment, comment, and comment some more.
Be creative! I wish I’d partnered up with other bloggers SO much sooner! We had the best time with our #SwapItLikeItsHot post, but I also have a tribe of gals with whom I can bounce ideas off… vent… laugh… brainstorm… point being, you never know if the person you sit next to at breakfast will be hosting a great Holiday House Tour or the woman you meet at the coffee bar will be looking for contributors in a month. Have fun and don’t be afraid just to barge in and say ‘hi’.
Finally, take it all in. Sure, the session about Secondary Advertising Platforms will be helpful and the chance to connect with Ryobi is exciting, but honestly… what I loved and remember the most about my first year was hearing how other bloggers got started, how people navigate the ups and downs of the blogging seasons, time management, making connections with readers… the personal stories.
Can’t wait to see everyone and gather my marching orders for this little blog moving forward! Oh… and don’t be afraid to sew together a bunch of rugs to suit your needs. My post for the day!
