I’ve been sitting on a little secret ALL summer and ALL fall and ALL winter and I can FINALLY let you in on the scoop. Y’all… I’m going to be on HGTV’s Flea Market Flip!! Yeah… read it again: FLEA. MARKET. FLIP. Heard of it?! It’s pretty much my life. (The premise… not the show. Because that would be pathetic.) Two teams are given $500 and three clever (but easily tweek-able) ‘assignments’ to buy at a flea market. We get one day (and a few worker elves) to upcycle/ repurpose/ refinish our purchases and then we try to sell them at a flea market in New York City. The team with the biggest profit wins mega bucks.
Like I said, the show’s always been one of my faves so when my girl, Jill sent me a Craigslist posting for a casting call, I thought… what the heck and filled that out asap.
I kid you not… my phone rang 45 minutes later. I guess that’s how desperate I sounded in my email. The casting agent was filming teams for producers and wondering if she could swing by the next weekend. Um… yeah. I was available. Jill (who was of course my designated teammate) and I immediately went into hypothetical overdrive… We had been told the casting director and her assistant were going to be asking us questions about “our” projects. Problem was… Jill and I hadn’t collaborated on anything. (I mean, how many team DIY projects do you do?) Thankfully, Jill is an avid reader of Ciburbanity so she was well versed in many of the projects around my house, but it still felt awkward. “Tell me about why you chose RED for those chevron chairs?” (And yeah… we shared this photo… 80s costume party… I went as sorority Jill.)
Turns out, the only thing they really cared about was our banter, our personalities, and…of course, our smoking hot good looks. We knew that we would obviously be pigeon holed as the ‘suburban moms’ and I can’t say we did anything to dispel that… but we certainly tried not to play it up!
A few weeks later, and the glorious, earth shattering, time continuum blowing email came through… welcome aboard, girls!!
Cut to me doing something killer cool like this:
Aside from everything to do with our fourth child (and the rest of my family), this was hands-down the most exciting thing that happened last year. I mean I got to wear a mic. I had a producer. Emails were written TO ME about things like filming dates and television release forms. What the what?!
I’m going to milk this for all it’s worth and post a bunch of behind the scenes stuff…. but that has to come once the show airs. I’ll fill you in on WHERE we shopped, WHAT we did for the makeover and HOW we worked/ didn’t work the crowds on our sell date. How’s that for ambiguous?!
Without giving anything away, I’ll reiterate that Jill and I couldn’t have asked for a more exciting and fantastic few days. From the crew to producers to competitors to other contestants, we were in DIY heaven! Turns out we both love being in front of a camera. Turns out we both love the competitive side of crafting. Turns out Lara Spencer is really, really pretty and bad a$$ at what she does. (Yeah, we swooned.)
Stay tuned for more posts about the specifics of our three days of filming. I’m still within the HGTV circle of trust so until our episode airs, this is as much as I can divulge but I promise to give you the full scoop when we have our big HGTV debut!! Our episode is titled “Rocker Dudes vs. Designing Moms” and is scheduled to air APRIL 6, 2014 on HGTV at 10:30 a.m. EDT… set your DVRs!
Oh- here’s a little hint from our episode… wink wink.
