Yeah, I’m the one responsible for getting this awful song stuck in your head… sorry.
Doing projects with Eleanor has become more and more of a creative pleasure than the wrangling of eels that projects with Oliver look like. (I direct your attention to this post if you have thoughts about her ensemble.)
She loves art, she appreciates the nuance of things like, “wait” and “slowly” and “don’t eat it.” On Saturday morning, Mark took Oliver for a haircut and some errands so after 45 minutes upstairs choosing her outfit, Eleanor asked to do an activity.
A quick scan through my Kids board on Pinterest and I realized this Sharpie tie-dye activity was one I’d been curious to try with her. We didn’t have any t-shirts, but I did have this white bandana in our craft closet and, let’s be honest, she doesn’t need any more crazy articles of clothing to integrate into her wardrobe… the bandana will work just fine.
- white fabric anything
- Sharpie markers
- disposable plastic cup and rubber band
- rubbing alcohol
Stretch the fabric over the mouth of the cup and use the rubber band to hold the fabric in place. Draw inside this circle with your Sharpies channeling your inner Matisse; Eleanor seemed to try a different pattern on each circle she decorated.
After you’ve finished decorating this circle of fabric, take your rubbing alcohol and drip it onto the fabric. We used an old medicine dropper, but you can use a squirt bottle or just pour it slowly. The rubbing alcohol will make the Sharpie blend together into an amazing tie dye appearance.
Repeat for as many circles as you want! Eleanor was eager for the first three circles and then we took a little hiatus. We came back to it throughout the day and the finished product is so pretty! I think she plans to use it as a blanket for her
I only had the basic ROYGBV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet) Sharpies but they make them in every color so this would be really fun to try with more subtle colors like pale green and aquas… next time!
p.s. Did you notice the amazing little button on my sidebar this morning?!?!? #9 Home Design Mom, whoot!
