Colorful Rustic Wreath

Psssst… this post *might* contain affiliate links: see my disclosure here.

Many, MANY good ideas start at Anthropologie. And by “ideas” I mean “that’s amazing, but whoa… that’s expensive, I could make that.” This wreath actually wasn’t ridiculous, but it’s sticks. And something about paying for sticks didn’t sit well with me.  If you follow me on Instagram then you saw this picture of Martha in her hiking outfit. We took a field trip and gathered a few fallen branches about the width of my finger.

I cut them into 5″ lengths and gathered whatever thread I had on hand: embroidery thread, metallic sewing thread from the dollar store, plain ol’ cotton thread…even yarn would work. It’s mindless crafting (the best kind), but I will warn you it gets tedious. You’ll see the pile of sticks I ended up with and I had a tiny wreath to show for it. Next year, I’ll start early and aim for something larger!

The premise is easy peasy- just wrap your sticks with whatever thread you have on hand. Mix it up as much as you want… some can be two colors, some just one. Metallics, stripes… up to you. I left a little space in the middle because I knew I was going to drill, but you could certainly drill first and then just wrap the whole thing avoiding the hole.

The Anthro version had some nice metallic ends, so I silver leafed a handful of the stick ends.

Then I carefully drilled through the middle of each stick. I only broke one particularly brittle one, but this is basically an easy step.

For the wreath frame, I used a wire hanger. Obviously I had to trim the excess wire and used pliers to bend and wrap the end pieces, but it was the perfect size. I toyed with adding a clear pony bead between each stick, but I liked the look of them plain and simple.

To finish ‘er off, I wrapped some velvet ribbon around the exposed wire and hung her on the last undecorated square inch of our house.

I know, I know… down to the wire with all the holiday decor, but I’ve been so excited to put this one together and see if it was close to the Anthro version. Aside from being 1/4 the size, I’d say next year I’ll have something similar! Copycat for the win!
