I’ll start by saying this is post is not my cup of tea. It feels very “look at me, look at me.” Why this is any different than sharing the house or my kids or crafts, who knows… but… I figured things would get awkward if I didn’t say anything soon and then all of a sudden, BAM: baby announcement post. Cut to the chase, the beauty below is coming to a delivery room near us in October! Yep, the 6th member of the Ciburbanity family is cooking away.
With construction going on right now, I’m afraid I won’t have much opportunity for fun ‘nesting’ posts. The other kids slept in our room for the first 8 weeks, and then we moved them into their own quasi-decorated rooms. We made some effort to set up a nursery for Eleanor back in the city (with paint and all- a real gamble in a rental!).
Oliver’s windowless nursery in Brooklyn never quite got its act together since we were back and forth to the suburbs and ultimately only there for a little under 2 years. (Hence this quickie photo for the listing agent weeks before the move!)
I’m afraid the baby will have a similar lot in life. Even though we’re adding a bedroom, still TBD who will get that shiny new space. Right now, our house has three bedrooms and the playroom that Eleanor has sort of adopted as her ‘area’, so four sleeping spots in all. It’s nice for one of those bedrooms to stay somewhat neutral and flexible so we can also use it when guests come to town.
When baby is ready for some independence, he/ she can either move up to the guest room so the new bedroom will become Martha’s…. The baby can get the new bedroom… Martha and Eleanor can share the new room… lots of options. The new room will be off on its own a bit, so that makes it a nice candidate for a nursery/ guest suite when needed. Especially if Eleanor and Oliver continue to share their room again… everyone can kind of stay put, and I could tweek the Martha/ Guest room to make it more personal for her!
So back to issues of the womb. I’m never particularly creative in the ways that I’ve told Mark, but I figured now’s a good a time as any to review how I’ve shared the exciting news in the past. For Eleanor, I was too excited and in shock to be all that clever or- more to the point- to keep the news to myself long enough to plan something! I think I asked him whether his calendar was going to be clear in April since I had some important plans.
For Oliver, I got my act together. Here’s what I showed Mark to let him in on our little addition.
Martha came as a bit of a surprise; she beat us to the punch by a couple of months, so again… I think there was some disbelief that clouded my potential creativity. I honestly don’t remember how I told Mark! These were taken about 1 week before Martha’s arrival:
For Smith #4, I grabbed some typical pregnancy items from the store, and left them in a bag on the counter. When Mark got home, I asked him to do me a favor and unload the items. I liked the idea of letting his wheels turn a bit!
Now that the cat’s out of the bag, I’ll try to fill you in on any baby musings, baby decorating, or baby planning that comes up… again, with construction going down, probably no real design for the baby in the near future, but maybe I’ll surprise myself!
