I’m gonna need some support over the next few days, folks. Send prayers or chocolate or Anthropologie gift cards… I’m taking on my first big-girl upholstery project and I’m not gonna lie… it’s making me a little edgy. And by edgy I mean, rage-y. So much rage. How can one little release cut make a grown woman want to throw her pretty sewing scissors into traffic?!
This fine specimen of a chair has been in our garage for year…S. Years. I grabbed it on Craigslist because it was a sleek modern take on a wingback chair. I figured it had straight lines and might be something I could figure out on my own. Fast forward 2+ years and… it’s time. I’m working with the amazing folks at Fairfield World and Dritz on this and I’m sure they have a pool going as to whether I’ll be able to pull this whole thing off.
Here’s what I’ve done so far. I’ve taken about a jillion pictures so that I can remember how this thing was put together from the start.
I’ve ripped off the dirty dusty disintegrating fabric and foam. I’m a risk taker so no HAZMAT suit. In an ideal world I would have save the old fabric to use as a template but it was taken away by the CDC. Almost.
I’ve pulled off every. single. staple and nail. I lost my favorite upholstery tool (affiliate link), but made it work with a screw driver and needle nose pliers.
And then I watched about 98 hours of YouTube videos on upholstery. Here’s what I’ve learned. It looks REAAALLLLLLYYYY easy in the videos. Here’s what else I learned. I needed about 12 materials that I didn’t have but I was too impatient to go get.
You know that feeling you got as a kid when you couldn’t french braid your hair no matter how long you sat and watched Charles in Charge and Silver Spoons? No? Well upholstery evoked THAT emotion in me. Don’t get me wrong… I’ve upholstered other things. They’re all right here. But they’re NOT varsity armchair status.
I’m hoping to finish this up early next week and then I’ll give you a full play by play if I’m still standing to tell about it. I’ve been in the city for the Better Homes and Garden’s annual StyleMaker event and eager to give you the scoop! Yep… I’ve managed to fool them into thinking I’m a ‘stylemaker’. Suckers. Head over to my instagram where I’ve been sharing all the behind the scenes awesomeness!
Othere things afoot? Someone hit the fast forward button on fall and it’s October this weekend! Which means… the One Room Challenge is almost underway. That starts on Thursday (gulp) and I have 5 months of projects to cram into six weeks for you! Gah! (Here’s what I did for the last one.) I’m off to go binge watch a few more YouTube videos and then I might try to sprinkle holy water (aka water I purchased at Homegoods) onto the upholstery in progress. The chair is slotted for our family room so here’s hoping it likes the ambient noise of children barking and the Real Housewives!
Have a great weekend everyone!!! (Come back on Sunday for the Sunday Seven.)
